Frostburg Artist Wins “Dead” Envelope Art Contest

As deadheads everywhere prepare for the final Grateful Dead Farewell tour this summer, one local artist will go down in the “Dead” annals of fame. Chelsea Elliott of Frostburg, Md. is the winner of the latest envelope art contest.

This sort of thing has been going on for years as part of the band’s homey tradition of processing ticket requests via snail mail. The envelope art began as a way to entice the mail handlers to open requests, now you can find books cataloging Grateful Dead Envelope Art.

The picture featured above is a previous winner, but you can go to the tribute website soon to have a look at Maryland’s contribution to “Dead” art.  If your are looking for a little dose of Dead, try this recent WYM.
